Heart warming...and well deserved
It was quite clear from the offset that both teams meant business, Flowserve Santos have a high ability level across their team, which creates a disciplined slick passing machine at times, more games under their belt as a team will make them an incredible threat to all they play. Newark Cavaliers are a team that has talent, they are of all ability levels that are wide-ranging and mixed, but benefit from 'improvement' and finding a positive experience for all as a priority.
Creating Intuitive and creative players is at the forefront of the teams' ethos, but this is partnered with strong player game management, understanding of roles, and the fundamental discipline and responsibilities that come with them, this showed in the decision-making of the players in the game.
Cup matches are all about pressure, quick penetration, creating lots of opportunities, and taking them. Newark Cavaliers hardly ever use cones in training, they train in a structured but fun environment with game scenarios and game and role management. We coach free-thinking people, not robots! This showed in the game where they stuck to a game plan for pretty much 90% of the game, but adapted and overcame on their own to deal with changes, challenges, and opportunities... having the quick realization that you can change a game with imagination, and creation is that extra little bit of spark you need for when a game plan is challenged. This meant when key higher ability players were not on their game, others stepped in without fear of mistakes and made up the difference. A true team performance from a spirited and fantastic bunch of boys.
Key technical points were... Goalkeeper game management, the discipline of game shape, hard pressing in our own half in pairs, first to the ball on the ground, crowding their channels, and breaking up the direction of their player carrying the ball. High Possession levels were not king for this game, Flowserve could realistically have the ball in their own half, this meant we only had to manage one half of the pitch. Possession then becomes critical at key points, which makes it about what you do with it... and quickly. The first thought in a cup match and possession is penetration and results from it. I'm very proud to say that both the Cavaliers' goals came from the training ground and great assists.
