Coming up, in Newark at the YMCA Sports Village on Saturday 7th November, a Commemorative Game of Football. Honouring the moment British and German soldiers put down their weapons and shared a game.

Soldier, William Setchfield, of 28 Northgate, Newark, had his photograph taken with solider's of the 134th Saxony Regiment, at Messines, Belgium, between the trenches.

On the night of Christmas Eve, the Germans had placed on the parapets of their trenches, a line of small Christmas trees which they lit. They started singing Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht to which the lads from the 1st Battalion of the Warwickshire regiment joined in.

Christmas greetings were shouted between what were only hours earlier, warring enemies.

A truce was agreed, soldiers left their trenches and exchanged gifts and became friends for a short time. William, and his brother Alfred, were keen local Newark footballers, and his father, a boot-maker, who also, made leather footballs.

From William's letters, received from the front line and printed in the local newspaper, pre-and-post Christmas 1914, the gift sent to William, from Alfred and opened in the trenches, was likely the actual leather football, used in that now, world-famous-game, played, between the rusty barbed-wire on a frosty turnip field.
