A good 3 points for Town in Southwell

A misty, slightly damp but warm autumn morning, perfect for playing football, greeted Town on their arrival at the Recreation Ground.

The game was played on pitch close to Southwell Minster a surface used by the Southwell City, Saturday side, against United a club who in previous seasons had won numerous trophies including the Notts Cup, the Premiership and the Willie Hall Cup. Before this game it was thought that United might be one of the teams who were favourite and capable of winning the league title this coming season.

Town dominated for most of the ninety minutes playing some nice football against a side that had to date this season failed to secure a win, having drawn two of the three league fixtures played. Nevertheless, United are a good side with considerable spirit capable of no doubt beating others teams in the premier as the season progresses.

Ben Lund, for Newark was at his very best especially in first half, his chasing and running at the Southwell time-after- time put the United defence under pressure as their left back failed to contain Ben's dribbling and crossing from the touchline. This early onslaught produced dividends when on 9 minutes a corner taken by Tom Perkins was met by the ever smiling Simon Greenfield who directed a powerful header beyond the goalkeeper 0-1.

With three minutes remaining in the first half a ball was collected by Stefan Bilyk near the centre circle a 30 metre pin-point accurate pass to Bobby Lee followed. Bobby, with his back to the defence controlled the ball and moved in parallel to the the United goal, beating one then two defenders he then turned and unleashed a rocket of a shot that hit a defender and came to the feet of Martin Rose, with some composure, Martin from three metres calmly placed the ball to the right of the goalkeeper 0-2.

HT 0-2.

Whilst town throughout this game enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half United played their best football and at times they looked a threat passing first time balls over the Towns defence to forwards who were always ready to chase and shot from distance.

On 75 minutes a long ball played down the left wing found Bobby Lee without hesitation he pushed the ball to the corner flag and then towards goal before driving a pass across goal at some pace that ball was chased down by Stefan Bilyk who beat a defender before making a similar cross from the left on this occasion it was met by the dancing foot of Louis Cree who dispatched first-time the ball from five metres into the net 0-3.

On 85 minutes and overconfident Town defence playing with a little to much complacency allowed a lose ball to dwell to close to their own goal. To be fair to Town the defence had played for the majority of the game extremely well so they might be permitted to make as was the case on Sunday an error. A little confusion allowed a ball to be given directly to James Nussey who found it no doubt less difficult to miss that to score from three metres 1-3.

It was pleasing to see after several weeks of absence through injury the reappearance of Luke Parsons for the last five minutes of play. Luke, with only two minutes remaining had a header that should have given town another goal but last season's goal machine, with fifty goals, was no doubt keeping his powder dry for a full return, in it is hoped, a couple of weeks time.

FT 1-3.

Man of the Match for Town was awarded to Bobby Lee who modestly suggested in the changing after the game that it should have been awarded to another but Bobby was always a noticeable concern to the United defence, a player who given any space will go directly for goal.

Well done Newark a well deserved victory and another valuable 3 points keeping you firmly on the top of the premier league.

Collingham at home this coming Sunday in the Notts Cup. So more of the same please.
