In producing what was arguably their best all round performance of the season so far Town lined up an appetising home Senior Cup quarter final tie with Notts County’s Under 23 side.
Having been rescued by the fog in the previous meeting the Blues were prepared for another tough test but got off to the perfect start as in the 3rd minute Lewis Chambers robbed a hesitant Dan White 25 yards out before advancing and slotting the ball past Luka Wagstaff who then saved well from Rhys Lewis’s looping header from a Daryl Price cross. Kimberley, although quick to the ball and showing admirable skills, failed to find their touch in the final third, several opportunities going astray. Nathan Burrows was eventually called into action to save from Josh Barr-Rostron after good work by Jordan Smith. As the half progressed Newark, playing with pace and confidence, looked threatening every time they entered the Kimberley half, almost doubling their lead on 33 minutes as poor control by Wagstaff let Chambers in again, his lofted shot coming back off the bar. He redeemed this lapse minutes later, snatching the ball off Chambers’ feet following a Tyler Martin cross. Burrows then did well to keep the scores level as a right wing corner fell for Dan Hopkins, the Town keeper saving with his feet. As half time approached Newark had the ball in the net again, Price finishing off George Asplin’s cross but denied by an offside flag.
The Blues started the second half on the front foot, both Price and Martin having early shots blocked. Chambers had yet another effort well saved before a Matt Gamble through ball put Price through but the pacy striker lofted the ball over the bar. The second goal wasn’t long in coming, however, as Price became the supplier, threading the ball through the defence for Chambers to notch his second of the evening on 53 minutes. Less than a minute later the match was all but won as Martin and Price combined to give Asplin a close range finish. The hardworking Jonny Wiles then limped off to be replaced by Liam Warner. Smith then broke away on a solo run, but Burrows was again out well to clear the danger. A great show of determination from Martin put Town four up on 62 minutes. In a tight situation on the bye line he outwitted the covering defender before beating Wagstaff from what looked to be an impossibly tight angle. A rash of substitutions followed Matty Stevens and Jack Durkin replacing Martin and Lewis, Stevens inches away from converting Asplin’s free kick and then, in the 76th minute, producing a sweeping crossfield ball to Asplin whose low cross was finished off by Price for a well-deserved final goal.
This was an excellent display of attacking football in which all 14 players on show contributed. To their credit, although they must have been hugely disappointed, Kimberley proved generous in defeat and played a full part in a thoroughly entertaining cup tie.
