Blues eased comfortably into the quarter finals

Newark Town 6 - 1 Sherwood Colliery Reserves
The Blues eased comfortably into the quarter finals of the Notts FA Senior Trophy with a comprehensive win against South division opposition,
Town gave a first start to defensive midfielder Abdul-Raheem Sunmonu with Elliott Burrell drafted into the starting line up after Jonny Wiles was injured during the pre-match warm up.
Newark made a dream start, going a goal up in the 3rd minute, James Gardner heading a left wing corner against the bar, the clearance being returned into the area by Kosi Nwobi for Ainsley Finney to fire home. After Sunmonu had sent in a shot narrowly over the bar, Town doubled their lead on 7 minutes, Finney striking again after a long ball eluded the Sherwood defence, Finney producing a cool finish. Sunmonu again tried his luck from far out after spotting the keeper off his line but once more it passed inches over the top. Sherwood rallied and reduced the lead after 18 minutes as a ball from Charlie Hardwick wasn’t cleared allowing the experienced Tristan Burrell to shoot across Harry Haywood. Visiting keeper Charlie Dando was down to pull off a good save from Lewis Chambers after great interplay with Finney. Chambers then went one better on 34 minutes finishing off a wind-assisted ball from the back to give the Blues a comfortable lead at the interval.
As Sherwood threatened at the start of the second half Gardner did well to hold off Danny Townsend after he was put away by Burrell while Haywood was at full stretch to hold a lofted shot from Matt Day. The next goal, however, came at the other end after Finney was brought down on the edge of the area in the 62nd minute. The striker took the free kick himself, the ball hitting the underside of the crossbar before ending up in the back of the net Five minutes later the player recorded his second four goal haul in successive matches, heading home a pinpoint cross from Chambers. Dando then saved a close range effort from Nwobi with his feet. To their credit Sherwood refused to lie down. Haywood pulling off a smart save from Ivo Radzivilovics before Burrell sent a shot into the side netting. Max Jemson went close for Town before the scoring was completed in the final minute, Mason Rhiney curling a perfectly struck free kick round the defensive wall to round off an excellent team performance.
Newark will now face either Radcliffe Olympic or Basford United Under 21s in the quarter final on March 19th .
