Blues exited the League Cup

Retford United 3 – 0 Newark Town
Sometimes you have to admit the better team won on the night and this was certainly the case on a bitterly cold night at Cannon Park as the Blues exited the League Cup in the first round.
Town were missing the injured Sam Bartle with Abu Wadada included in the starting eleven.
Ben Newman was booked as early as the fifth minute, leaving him walking a tightrope from which he finally fell in the second half. Retford created most of the early chances, Town’s defence coping well with the pressure. Booth shot wide of the post and Fell cleared the bar, fence and car park from the edge of the area. Wadada had the visitors’ first opportunity on 21 minutes, outrunning his defender but failing to trouble home keeper Crosby. Retford went ahead on 33 minutes from the penalty spot as Sid Costa brought down Kane in the area, West stepping up to beat Harry Haywood. As half time approached the Blues’ keeper did well to prevent a second goal, going down at the feet of Baird.
Retford dominated play in the early stages of the second half and increased the lead on 53 minutes, Mlynarski making a run down the left, his cross reaching Dawes who fired home from outside the area. Sub Chanju Mphande combined with Jackson Buckthorp to set up Wadada whose shot was fielded by Crosby, Town’s first shot on target coming on 58 minutes. Newman then received a second yellow card making the task even more difficult. Lewis Chambers then left the field after taking a knock, being replaced by Mason Rhiney. Haywood was called into action on 74 minutes palming a shot from Baird into the side netting, but could do little to prevent Retford’s third goal in the 77th minute after a mix-up between Rhys Lewis and James Gardner let in Ben Thornton who was able to pick his spot. Newark’s best opportunity to get on the scoresheet came in the final minutes, Crosby making an excellent double save from Gardner and Elliott Burrell.
Town complete their run of six away games as they visit bottom of the table Askern Miners on Saturday (3.00pm)
