The Blues returned to the top

Askern Miners 0 – 2 Newark Town
The Blues returned temporarily to the top of the Central Midlands Oremier North division as they picked up the points from a game which won’t live long in the memory.
Town made changes after the midweek defeat in the Floodlit Cup, giving Jeremiah Ogie his first league start while Ben Sharpe, Ben Newman and Elliot Burrell all returned to the starting eleven.
In sunny but breezy conditions Newark took a tenth minute lead amid scenes of confusion after Lewis Chambers was brought down by the keeper un the penalty area. The referee awarded a spot kick but after heated protests changed his mind and gave a free kick instead. Ainsley Finney’s kick took a deflection off the defensive wall allowing Chambers to slot the ball home. Three minutes later Askern should have been level as Bailey May got the better of Rhys Lewis but with the goal at his mercy fired the ball against the foot of the post. Finney then threaded the ball through for Burrell who could only find the side netting then Chambers went close as he latched onto a ball from Kosi Nwobi but narrowly failed to find the target. An underhit backpass almost let in May again but Harry Haywood made a last ditch clearance. the Town keeper then going down well at the feet of Elliot Mountfield. The Blues then had a great chance to double the lead on the stroke of half time when Sharpe was brought down by Joel Tomlinson. Chambers stepped up to take the penalty but his shot lacked pace and direction and was saved by Richard Groom.
Manager Nathan Arnold made changes at the start of the second half, Jonny Wiles and Abdul-Raheem Sunmonu replacing Ogie and Newman. Another Chambers cross found Finney in a promising position but he failed to get in a shot and the ball was scrambled clear. On a sticky pitch neither side was able to produce anything of quality with too many intended passes failing to find their intended target. Lewis saw a well placed header from a right wing corner headed off the line before Newark finally increased their lead on 73 minutes. Wiles’ innocuous ball in from the right was completely missed by Groom who allowed it to pass through his hands. There was little else of note in the closing stages, Askern’s forwards failing to create much danger, Town happy to take the three points.
After several changes to the fixture list Town return to the YMCA on Saturday when they face Kiveton Miners Welfare (3 pm)
