two goals from ace striker Lewis Chambers

AFC Bentley 0 – 2 Newark Town
Town negotiated a potentially trick encounter against the only team to have taken points away from the YMCA so far this season with two goals from ace striker Lewis Chambers.
There was just one change from the side that won at Phoenix the previous week, Chambers returning to the number 9 shirt, replacing Abu Wadada.
On another heavy surface, Town almost slipped behind as early as the 7th minute, Sam Bartle losing his footing allowing Theo Mowatt to take the ball round keeper Harry Haywood before a superbly timed interception from Sid Costa diverted the ball for a corner. Four minutes later the Blues were in front, a Nathan Arnold corner causing confusion in the Bentley defence, Chambers poking the ball home from close range. The same pair then combined to bring a diving save from home keeper Ryan Bedford. Bentley retaliated, Neil Johnstone trying his luck from 30 yards out but narrowly clearing the bar. Town, however, had the balance of play without creating many clear-cut chances, Mason Rhiney going closest with a shot past the post. The Blues defence, in which Bartle and Rhys Lewis were prominent dealt capably with any threat from the home side. Bentley were fortunate not to be reduced to ten men on 37 minutes, Danny Dickinson having received a yellow for tripping Jonny Wiles, then brought down Chambers minutes later but somehow escaped with a lecture.
The early stages of the second half were scrappy, neither keeper being called into serious action. Town were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, as Arnold was felled, but the resulting free kick was drilled over the bar. The second goal came on 67 minutes, following good work by Jackson Buckthorp. As the Bentley defenders attempted to clear, Lewis intercepted, the ball reaching Chambers who evaded the advancing Bedford and scoring from an acute angle. The Blues almost added a third as Wiles drove a free kick into the Bentley area, the ball reaching James Gardner who found the side netting. Sub Ben Newman then put in a great challenge to put Ben Sharpe away on the left, his cross being met by Mark Faflik whose shot cleared the bar.
The result took Town’s winning run to seven, and was the third consecutive clean sheet. The Blues take a break from league action as they travel to face old rivals Retford United in the first round of the League Cup on Friday evening (7.45 pm).
