Newark Town 5 – 0 Crowle Colts
The Blues picked up three more points in their quest for promotion and in the process recorded their sixth successive clean sheet in the league against a Crowle side who showed plenty of pace but couldn’t match Town’s eye for goal.
Town included Lincoln United defender Ben Richards on the bench alongside the returning Rhys Lewis.
The early stages were even with Crowle quick to snuff out Town’s attacks and it was the visitors who had the first chance, Jordan Spencer hitting a free kick just over the bar, Town retaliated with a looping effort from Jonny Wiles also too high. After efforts from Jackson Buckthorp and Kosi Nwobe had narrowly missed the target, the breakthrough finally came in the 31st minute from a left side corner which was initially blocked by the keeper but fell to James Gardner who thumped the ball home through a ruck of players. Crowle put together a sweeping move which ended with Harry Haywood making a low save from Matty Steeper’s shot. Lewis Chambers then went close with header fllowing a long throw from Wiles.
The first action of the second half almost saw a Crowle equaliser, Ben Johnson’s fierce 25 yard shot coming back off the bar. Following a brief spell of pressure from the visitors Chambers broke away, running half the length of the pitch before dispatching the ball past keeper Zach Beedle, doubling Town’s lead on 50 minutes. Nwobe and Gardner were replaced by Richards and Lewis, Richards making an immediate impact with a towering header from another Wiles corner. Newark kept pressing and were rewarded in the 77th minute, Chanju Mphande scoring his first goal for the club from an acute angle, the shot appearing to deceive Beedle as it went across him into the far corner. Two minutes later it was four, Chambers getting his second of the night and his 42nd of the season from almost the same position as Mphande. The Blues rounded off a successful evening in added time , Chambers making a determined run down the right before squaring the ball for Ainsley Finney to hammer the ball home.
Newark travel to Dearne & District on Saturday before next week;’s make or break matches against Retford and Clay Cross.
