The Blues suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the season

St Josephs Rockware 2 – 0 Newark
The Blues suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the season at the hands of an uncompromising Worksop side who knocked the visitors out of their stride and missed the opportunity to go to the top of the table. They were without leading scorer Lewis Chambers which certainly contributed to the lack of goalscoring opportunities created.
Nathan Arnold returned to the starting eleven with Jake Hardy leading the forward line. Zak Kersey created Town’s first chance, his cross being headed behind for a corner. St Josephs took the lead in the 17th minute, Matthew Templeton getting the better of his marker before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the area which flew past Harry Haywood into the top corner. Haywood came to the rescue minutes later as a slip by Sam Bartle let in Scott Wesley whose angled drive was fingertipped away. As Newark retaliated, Matty Clarke sent a low ball across the Worksop area which Hardy just failed to convert. A succession of corners late in the half brought no reward, Worksop’s well drilled defence dealing with any aerial threat with very little difficulty.
Newark failed to make much headway in the early stages of the second half, too many intended passes going astray as Worksop’s physical approach stopped them from adopting their usual style of play. A huge punt by home keeper Hancock sent Jaden Thackery clear but his finish was high and wide of the target. The Blues brought on Ben Wallace and Elliott Burrell in place of Rhys Lewis and Kersey, but still struggled to make much progress. They did however manage to find the back of the Worksop net on 70 minutes Bartle heading home after James Gardner’s header across the area but the effort was ruled out by an offside flag. Arnold hit a well struck shot which was touched over the bar by Hancock but the final nail in the coffin came on 77 minutes when sub Max Sykes found himself with acres of space in the Town half before lifting the ball over Haywood and just inside the post. The referee, who had been rather lenient for the majority of the match finally took belated action, booking three home players in quick succession for a series of late challenges. All in all a disappointing afternoon for the Blues who need to recover quickly before Saturday’s match at home to Glapwell.
