Kiveton Miners Welfare 0 – 3 Newark Town
The Blues completed a productive week with a workmanlike if unspectacular win on a carpet of a pitch at Kiveton. The team showed two changes from the one which won so comfortably in midweek, George Stainfield replacing Ben Sharpe at left back and Lewis Chambers starting in place of Jake Hardy.
Town almost fell behind as early as the third minute, Cory Goodwin getting the wrong side of the covering defender an hitting the base of the post. Newark retaliated immediately, Chambers racing away on a solo run but seeing his shot turned round the post by keeper Stephen Booth. As the visitors grew into the game, chances began to appear, but the finishing touch was missing. Chambers tried an overhead kick which went wide as did Nathan Arnold’s cross shot. The breakthrough came on 28 minutes, James Gardner flicking a header past Booth from a right wing corner. Harry Haywood had to be alert in the Blues’ goal as Callum Riley’s free kick bounced awkwardly just in front of him, but he was able to touch the ball just round the post. A second goal was needed and it came five minutes before half time after great work by Mark Faflik who wriggled his way through the home defence before squaring the ball across the area for Arnold to take full advantage.
The Blues squandered a great chance to put the game to bed four minutes into the second half. Faflik was on another mazy run when he was brought down by Elliott Fox the referee giving the penalty. Faflik himself stepped up to take the kick, but Booth guessed correctly and made a good save at the right hand post. As play switched to the other end Fox almost made amends his shot beating Haywood but passing inches wide of the post. Town again came close on 53 minutes Jonny Wiles bringing a great save from Booth. Rhys Lewis going close with the ensuing corner. Newark finally wrapped the game up eight minutes from time when, following an intricate exchange of passes Chambers produced a low cross which was coolly finished off by sub Zak Kersey to pick up another valuable three points.
Newark start a run of three home games with the visit of St Josephs Rockware of Worksop on Saturday (3 pm).
