Thorne Colliery 1 – 0 Newark Town
In front of a crowd of 118 under the recently installed floodlights at Moorends the Blues were unfortunate not to come home with at least a point from a close game between two evenly matched sides.
The first half was even, Jake Hardy having possibly Town’s best chance when he intercepted a poor backpass from a Thorne defender but his lobbed shot couldn’t clear the keeper before a header from a corner came back off the Thorne bar as Newark finished the first half stronger.
Thorne held the upper hand in the early stages of the second half and scored what proved to be the decisive goal on 62 minutes as Shay Evans Booth netted from close range after Harry Haywood had pulled off a good save to block his first attempt.
Newark rang the changes in the final quarter, Zak Kersey, Jackson Buckthorpe and Kieran Job replacing George Stainfield, Ben Wallace and Sam Bartle. The last five minutes saw Town force a succession of corners followed by a Mark Faflik free kick which flew narrowly over the bar. Another corner in the dying seconds failed to produce the deserved equaliser.
Despite the result this was an encouraging start for the team, hopefully we can go one better this evening.
