First half goals from Chris Dobbie, James Munson and Rhys Stanley saw Newark pick up their third successive win and consolidate fifth position in the league table. With Reece Self and Alex Hales unavailable, Sam Gregory and Dom Swingler were both on the bench for their first appearances since January. On a sloping and well grassed pitch, the Blues made the best possible start, the opening goal coming within the first two minutes. A quick free kick by Daryl Price found Arron Martin on the left, his pinpoint cross being met by Dobbie on the far post. Town pressed home their advantage, Oli Dyson playing a good crossfield ball for Munson, whose cross was cleared with difficulty. A slip by Chris Riley almost let in Jake Wharton, but the Town keeper recovered just in time to hook the ball behind for a corner. On 15 minutes his opposite number Ryan Hopkins wasn’t so fortunate, his clearance from a backpass falling perfectly for Munson, who returned the ball over the keeper’s head into the empty net. Glapwell responded with a 25 yard effort from Brad Dowdall, which was well held by Riley just under the bar. While Newark still held the balance of play, Glapwell’s sporadic attacks were built from misplaced Town passes than their own efforts. A free kick from Geoffrey Gouveia was almost converted by James Whitfield before Town were forced into an early substitution, Rhys Stanley replacing Dobbie. The youngster made an immediate impression, with his pace allied to that of Price clearly unsettling the home side, while at the other end the central defensive pairing of Luke Parsons and Sean Fulcher was well in command. Price almost made it three on 39 minutes, accepting a pass from Stanley, and firing a curling shot which came back off the far post. The crucial third goal wasn’t long coming however, Sam Wilford finding Price whose cross was met with a crisp finish from Stanley a minute from the break.
Glapwell made two substitutions at the break, which shored up their defence, the second half being far more even. Another run and cross from the right by Stanley was met by Munson’s head, Price’s drive from 15 yards being well tipped over by Hopkins. Ash Barber went close for Glapwell, before Hopkins was again in action, diving to parry a shot from Martin. The home side should have pulled one back on 64 minutes, Whitfield found himself with only Riley to beat, but screwed his shot horribly wide. Town were now comfortable in possession, one passage of play seeing them put together 18 successive passes without a Glapwell player getting a touch. Stanley went close again, another penetrating crossfield ball from Price going narrowly wide. Glapwell finally got on the scoresheet on 84 minutes, Whitfield again finding himself one on one with Riley, and this time hitting the target. Town finished on the attack, Wilford seeing his shot held by Hopkins before Martin had a goalbound effort hacked off the line.
Tony Joynes praised the first half display saying “The game was virtually won by half time, but we kept up our standards through the 90 minutes, though Glapwell came back well after the break. It wasn’t an easy pitch to play on, but it’s important to keep the wins coming and we did that today”
