The Blues reached the half-way point of their league season with a poor performance which gave the home side only their second success of the season.

Town played with Alex Hales, Luke Parsons and Sean Fulcher as their three defenders with a five man midfield and two at the front.
The opening exchanges looked promising with Newark playing short passes which looked as if they might unlock the Thoresby defence. As early as the 2nd minute James Munson played a neat through ball to Chris Dobbie, whose snatched shot was deflected for a corner. This early promise was short-lived however as Thoresby took a 9th minute lead. Ben Selby played the ball in from the vacant right back position, Chris Riley failed to hold the ball and Danny Severn was left with the simple task of stroking the ball into an empty net. This was the encouragement the home side needed and Hales had to make a timely clearance from another Selby cross before a flicked header from Jamie Tryner was caught at full stretch by Riley. Town’s responses were somewhat limited, a Parsons header from Sam Bagworth’s corner and a deflected shot following a powerful run from Munson both coming to nothing. Hales was in action again with a good clearing header from Josh Brentnall, and on 35 minutes Riley produced an outstanding one-handed save from the same player. The resulting corner, however, saw the home side double their lead, Tony Buchanan rising unchallenged to head powerfully home. It was important for Town to pull one back before half time and tis they managed on 43 minutes, Parsons producing a powerful header from Bagworth’s corner.
Town again showed early promise after the break, Dobbie having a header cleared off the line from another Bagworth corner. George Pearce replaced Sam Gregory, and on the hour Town should have drawn level. A ball over the top from Parsons put Bagworth away, and he raced clear of the defence, but with only the keeper to beat, chose to square the ball rather than shoot, and munson’s shot struck a post and was cleared. Bagworth made way for Billy Hurst, Parsons being thrown forward in an attempt to pull things round. Hurst’s first involvement saw his flicked header pushed round for a corner by Keeper John Kirk. Another chance went begging on 69 minutes, as a run from inside his own half by Sam Wilford saw the ball fall to Parsons on the edge of game finally went out of Town’s reach on 77 minutes as a shot from the edge of the area by Chris Dyson ran loose and Severn was again left with a simple finish. Thoresby rubbed it in with a fourth goal in the 83rd minute as substitute Shaun Wragg thumped the ball home, despite a suspicion of offside. There were late bookings for JC MacDonald and Parsons, which were more signs of frustration than anything else, and the final result could have been even worse as Severn was left with a chance of his hat trick, but chose instead to turn inside and the chance disappeared.
