After a gap of two seasons, Newark and Ollerton resumed their rivalry at Station Road on Saturday, with the Blues clawing back a two goal deficit.

As usual this wasn’t one for the purist, but it did produce an entertaining 90 minutes, with the Blues coming back from two goals down to claim the points and move up to fifth place in the table. With a stiff breeze at their backs, Ollerton were first to show, Jamie Senior blazing a ball across the area, then unleashing a 30 yarder which Chris Riley touched over the bar. Danny Purves put over a couple of inviting crosses, from the second of which Sam Wilford shot too high under pressure from Jamie McAllister. Ollerton took the lead on 18 minutes, Lee Bowler’s ball in from the right falling to Aaron Norman who lashed it past Riley from 20 yards. Newark retaliated, visiting keeper Shaun Taylor making a one handed save to keep out Calum Fraser, the loose ball falling to Sam Bagworth, who found the angle too tight. Ollerton doubled their lead on 28 minutes. Three times the ball was played across the Newark area, and on the third occasion Jack Beeby was in enough space to give Riley no chance from close range. The Blues were shaken into action. Sean Fulcher had a header cleared of the line by Craig Stanton, and on 31 minutes they reduced the arrears following a left wing corner, Fulcher knocking the ball through to Fraser who netted from close range. After Riley had made a timely interception to frustrate Ricky Starbuck, the scores were levelled by a fine individual goal from Fraser, who chased down a long ball, showed determination to beat the covering defender and beat Taylor, the ball going in off the left hand post. A powerful run and shot by Sam Wilford was halted by an offside flag, and James Munson headed a Purves corner into the keeper’s arms as Newark ended the half on top.
Alex Hales replaced Munson at the break, releasing Arron Martin to play a forward role, and both he and Sam Gregory had shots saved before Newark took the lead for the first time on 57 minutes with a well-executed goal. JC McDonald’s superb ball from the right found Purves out on the left, and the full back raced into the clear, drawing Taylor before launching a perfect lob over his head and under the bar. Ollerton had failed to capitalise on their promising start and could have conceded again as both Fulcher and Luke Parsons went close. A determined run from Wilford forced a corner, which Fulcher headed home, but the goal was disallowed, the referee having detected some pushing. On what was now becoming a rare counter move, Ryan Bunce sent a header narrowly wide from Starbuck’s cross, but Town put the game beyond doubt in the 87th minute following excellent footwork in the visitors’ penalty area by sub George Pearce, which allowed Fraser a tap-in to complete a thoroughly deserved hat trick. The match was played in very good spirit, with Ollerton generous in defeat, and was well handled by referee Hawcroft.
