This wasn't a game for the faint-hearted, as the Blues surrendered a two goal advantage, only to claw it back in the closing stages.

This was a roller coaster of a match with the initiative constantly switching between the two teams. With Paling, Pearce, Hales, Martin, Mallinson and Swingler all missing, it was a case of all hands to the pump, and it made for a highly entertaining if nerve wracking afternoon.
Early pressure from the Blues brought instant results, as only 3 minutes had gone when Chris Dobbie slipped the ball through to Calum Fraser, whose angled shot beat Mike Teale in the Bentley goal. James Munson was then put through by Reece Self and saw his shot blocked, but the striker was soon on the scoresheet, forcing the ball home at the far post after Dobbie’s drive had come back off the bar. Two up after just 10 minutes, Town almost conceded seconds later, but Dan Read shot wide with just Chris Riley to beat. As the game evened up, Bentley reduced the arrears on 27 minutes, Billy Parkhouse curling the ball home after a short corner. After Fraser had gone close as the keeper came out to head clear, Newark restored their two goal lead with 38 minutes gone. Dobbie sent in a free kick from just outside the area, Teale juggled, and Munson stabbed the loose ball home from close range. On the stroke of half time, Fraser’s 25 yard strike was fingertipped over the bar, and Town looked to be cruising.
It took just 90 seconds of the second half to restore doubts, however, as sub Matty Brown headed Bentley back into the game with his first touch. With Bentley now in the ascendancy, Parkhouse grazed the woodwork from 25 yards out, and on 52 minutes the scores were level. Riley came out to challenge Ryan Nicholson, but failed to get to the ball and Courtney Peynado’s follow up shot came down from the underside of the bar, the goal being given despite vehement protests from the Town defence. On the hour Newark gave a debut to 17 year old Danny Lee and the youngster made an immediate impression, showing several deft touches and good vision. As the Blues regained the upper hand, the lead was recaptured on 69 minutes. Danny Purves sent the ball in from the left and a great flick on by Fraser allowed Sam Bagworth to find the net from a tight angle. Luke Parsons, who formed a solid partnership with Sean Fulcher at the heart of the defence then rescued Town with a superb clearance from Nicholson, and as play switched to the other end Peynado made a goal line clearance to deny Fraser following a corner. With Bentley now down to 10 men, the game again appeared safe, but with 76 minutes played more indecision at the back allowed Parkhouse in to grab his second of the game. Nicholson then struck the base of a post before Newark took the lead once more in the 82nd minute. Matt Wagner knocked the ball forward, Lee neatly playing the ball into Fraser’s path for a crisp finish. Still the game wasn’t settled, Parsons again producing a decisive block to keep Nicholson out. As Bentley desperately pushed forward, Newark finally sealed the points on 92 minutes, a sweeping diagonal ball from Purves finding Bagworth unmarked on the right, the shot flying past Teale to bring an end to a cracking game of football.
