Town had Dom Swingler on the bench on his return from injury and again tried their 3-5-2 formation, with Danny Lee and Arron Martin as wing backs, and this time it was a success.
The match got off to a bizarre start, Askern’s Austin Henry leaving the pitch after being summoned by a blonde lady for which he received a yellow card. Town took early control and were rewarded in the 7th minute as Sean Fulcher put an excellent ball in, Chris Dobbie knocked it on and Sam Wilford waltzed past two defenders to fire past Anthony Sykes. James Munson spurned a chance to double the score shortly afterwards, blasting the ball high and wide from close in. Wilford and JC McDonald then had shots blocked before Martin got on the end of a McDonald corner, but couldn’t keep his shot down. With Askern’s forwards offering little in return, it took a goal line clearance from Leon Cusworth to keep out another Wilford effort, but the lead was finally added to on 34 minutes. Dobbie touched the ball to Martin who slipped it through to Munson, the striker gratefully accepted the opportunity. A run by Austin gave the home side a rare corner, but Chris Riley collected Daniel Jones’s header with ease.
Luke Parsons was the first to threaten after the break, his firm effort a couple of feet wide after a McDonald free kick. The Askern goal then led something of a charmed life after Dobbie broke clear, Sykes somehow clawing the ball away, and Lee, following up couldn’t quite force it home. Newark didn’t have to wait long for number three however, McDonald’s corner being missed by the under pressure keeper, Dobbie hammering the loose ball into the roof of the net from distance. A penetrating run from sub Tom Mallinson sparked another spell of intense pressure on the Askern rearguard, the ball again being hacked off the line, and a confident handball shout being turned down. The home side produced a rare threatening move on 72 minutes, as Josh Taylor cut in but blazed his cross-shot wide of Riley’s left hand post. Askern’s midfield had by now almost melted away and Wilford almost took further advantage, unleashing a drive from 30 yards out which was inches over the bar. Town set the seal on a good all round performance on 86 minutes. A crossfield ball found Martin on the right which he brought down skilfully before launching a 25 yarder which flew past Sykes.
