Two superbly struck goals from Daryl Price and Sam Wilford brought Newark a much needed three points at a wet Station Road on Wednesday night.

With the luxury of an almost full strength squad for the first time this season, Tony Joynes brought in Alex Hales, Sam Gregory and Reece Self, who were all missing at AFC Mansfield, and a strong looking bench included Chris Dobbie and Daryl Price.
In terms of incident, the first half was somewhat lacking, with neither keeper overworked. For Town, Calum Fraser had an early shot saved at the second attempt, while a drive from Gregory was on target until deflected for a corner. Thoresby’s best chance fell to Josh Brentnall, but a timely challenge by George Pearce cleared the danger. Otherwise the visitors were restricted to long range efforts which were wide of the target. Price entered the game after half an hour, as the Blues changed formation, and immediately pepped up Town’s attack giving some indication of better things after the break.
In the first move of the second period, Price gave a sign of what was to come, as his lob from the right had keeper Glenn McPherson back-pedalling, the ball dropping over the bar. Fraser narrowly failed to connect with another ball in from the right, but the Blues should have taken the lead on 55 minutes, as Dom Swingler was put through. After rounding the keeper however, the angle proved too much, and the ball went agonisingly wide of the far post. Town were having much the better of the game at this point, the introduction of Dobbie and Sam Bagworth proving almost instantly successful, as McPherson did well to claw away Dobbie’s sharp header from Bagworth’s ball in. On 66 minutes, Town’s pressure finally paid dividends. Bagworth was brought down on the edge of the area and Price stepped up to curl the perfect free kick over the wall and under the bar, giving the Thoresby keeper no chance. A typically surging run down the right by Sam Wilford almost made it two, before a 35 yard strike from Danny Purves narrowly cleared the bar. With Hales, Pearce and Luke Parsons, in his 100th appearance for Newark, strong at the back, the visitors’ attempts on goal were limited, though Chris Riley had to be alert to push a Lewis Bingham shot round the post as the ball skidded off the wet surface. On 86 minutes Town put paid to any lingering doubts with another quality goal, Price and Reece Self, who again impressed, setting up Wilford, whose well struck shot found the far corner. A final mazy run from Price almost made it three, before referee Kristian Silcock, whose control of his final Central Midlands game was excellent, brought an end to things.
