This was all really Easington United’s fault. When the fixtures were released, Town were the “odd team out” with the Humberside club scheduled to visit Kinsley.

However their off field problems meant that while everyone else had a local derby to look forward to, Newark found themselves 50 miles up the A1 in deepest West Yorkshire, with a 14-man squad which included two 17-year-olds, two 18-year-olds, a goalkeeper signed on emergency cover the day before the match, and the manager, who pulled on a Town shirt for the first time since 2006. With two of the more experienced players succumbing to hamstring pulls during the game, the task became even harder.
That being said, there was little to choose between the two teams in the opening half, which was played on a field in serious need of a cut, using Town’s practice balls, as the home side hadn’t got a usable match ball of their own. Both sides had early chances, Tom Mallinson and Sam Bagworth going close, the latter after good work from young debutant Tom North. George Paling limped off after 10 minutes, to give 17 year old Jake Reynolds his first taste of senior action. Luke Parsons, who got through an incredible amount of work, made the first of many important clearances from Wood, before Danny Purves headed off the line to deny Towler. Reynolds showed a good touch to give Jamie Brooks an opening, the final shot going narrowly wide before Kinsley opened their account on 27 minutes, Rouse jumping highest to head home past Duncan Gee in the Town goal. Mallinson went close to grabbing an equaliser after Dom Swingler advanced down the left and slung over an accurate cross. Newark fell two behind in the 41st minute as Day cut in and Lafferty shot across the keeper.
Swingler and Bagworth combined well on the restart, the final ball just eluding Reynolds, but the Blues fell further behind on 52 minutes, as Appleton rifled home from ten yards out. A brief revival of fortunes came on 55 minutes, Bagworth doing well to reach a long ball from Parsons before keeper Chestney, before turning and blasting the ball into the net from a very acute angle. Damian Lloyd replaced North and impressed straight away with his accurate passing and perception. Towler struck the angle of bar and post on 64 minutes, but Kinsley’s fourth came a minute later, a fortunate deflection assisting Wood. Tony Joynes was pressed into action for the last 25 minutes after JC McDonald limped off, , but the final nail in Town’s coffin came on 79 minutes, Todd adding his second. On the bright side, the young players thrown in at the deep end against what may be called a “robust” Kinsley side all came out with much to their credit, but Newark will hope to have other player options when they travel to AFC Mansfield on Saturday.
