The Blues progressed to the third round of the Cup

Woodhouse Colts 0 – 5 Newark Town
The Blues progressed to the third round of the Buckingham Insurance League Cup with a comfortable win over Division One side Woodhouse Colts at a rain-soaked Forest Town Arena.
Town were missing Tom Moore from their previous match a fortnight ago but there was a welcome return on the subs bench, Jammy Lloyd returning after injury for his first outing of the season.
It was Woodhouse who threatened first as Ross Richmond burst through Town’s defence, his shot coming back off Nathan Burrows, the follow up effort going wide. In the 7th minute the home side went close again, Kyle Chadburn timing his run well to get behind the defence and volleying the ball just over the bar. However with just 14 minutes played it was the visitors who took the lead as Tyler Martin crossed from the left for Jonny Wiles to head past Cameron Barke. Wiles could have had a second minutes later after a he ran on to a defence-splitting ball from Rhys Lewis, but the shot went wide. In the next attack Newark doubled their lead, Lewis Chambers coolly lobbing the advancing keeper. Town tightened their grip on the game, almost grabbing a third on 26 minutes, a Marlon Grundy header coming back off the post. Town’s back line of Luke Parsons, Dom Sibilski and Ryan Attwell dealt well with Woodhouse’s forward moves wih Martin and Zak Johnson both posing threats on the flanks, as, with the conditions worsening and with the benefit of a strong wind in the second half, the Blues reached the interval in a strong position.
Newark didn’t take long to increase their lead, their third goal arriving on 52 minutes. Martin was again the supplier, Chambers’ shot coming off the post to leave Matthew Clarke with a tap in, his first goal for the club. Clarke then saw a shot narrowly clear the bar before Barke was down bravely at the feet of Chambers to smother the ball. Jammy Lloyd came on in place of Clarke for the last twenty minutes. Woodhouse had a great chance to reduce the deficit in the 73rd minute, but sub Jayden Bull put his header wide of the post from close range. Town scored twice in the closing minutes, the first a complete fluke, Barke clearing the ball which hit the retreating Chambers on the back and rebounded into the net. With a minute left, Town’s leading marksman completed his hat trick in more orthodox fashion to bring an end to the afternoon’s entertainment.
