Newark Town 3 -0 Sutton Rovers
For the third successive Saturday the Blues faced opponents from South Yorkshire and emerged on top, although not without a couple of close escapes in the second half. Craig Bridge and Danny Boulton made their first starts of the season with Luke Parsons returning after missing last Saturday’s cup win.
Town got off to a dream start with a goal in the 3rd minute. Marlon Grundy found space on the right, whipping a cross into the area for the incoming Tom Moore to fire across Lee Mayberry in the visitors’ goal. Dom Sibilski then tried his luck from 30 yards out, his rising shot clearing the bar. Newark were finding plenty of room to exploit, Matty Clarke and Bridge in particular using the width of the pitch to switch the point of attack. Sutton were finding it difficult to mount counter attacks in the early stages, Luke Chambers going closest with a shot that ran a yard wide of the post. Mayberry produced a good save from Boulton before clutching a close range shot from Lewis Chambers after the striker had beaten three men in a mazy run. On 26 minutes the lead was doubled, Grundy again the provider as his perceptive through ball found Moore who outpaced the covering defender to score his second of the afternoon. Bridge then floated in a free kick which Boulton came within inches of converting. The Blues came close to adding to their tally on 39 minutes, Boulton producing a delicate chip which rolled against the foot of the post. Sutton struck back with a fine drive from Ryan Walker which was narrowly too high.
Luke Parsons was first to threaten in the second half, his shot from the edge of a crowded penalty area being deflected for a corner from which his follow-up shot was collected at full stretch by the keeper. Good work by Rhys Lewis on the right resulted in a cross which found Lewis Chambers whose close range effort was blocked on the line. Luke Chambers then sent in a long range effort which brought the best out of Nathan Burrows. Kieran Job and Ryan Attwell replaced Boulton and Lewis with twenty minutes remaining. Newark then rode their luck as Sutton contrived to hit the woodwork twice in as many minutes. First a long ball forward from Adi Parker was lobbed against the post by Connor Moore and in the next attack Luke Chambers’ shot again came back from the base of the upright. With ten minutes remaining Luke Chambers, who had, for him, a frustrating afternoon, found the back of the net but was denied by the linesman’s flag. Sutton threatened again in the final minutes, Josh Gillies’ header shaving the bar, but Town had the last word, Lewis Chambers crossing from the right, allowing Job to seal the win from close in.
