Strong end to the season

Newark Town ended their season, and with it their fifteen year tenancy at Collingham with a comfortable 3-0 win against fifth placed Renishaw

A strong wind blew down the Station Road pitch resulting in a disjointed first half with neither team mastering the conditions, Town’s stand-in keeper Gary Clark coping well with Renishaw’s infrequent threats but goal mouth action was at a premium, resulting in a goalless first half

Newark adapted far better to having the wind in their favour and were soon pressing the visitors. On 54mins a Ricky North through ball found Ryan Pell, whose shot from 15 yards beat Brandon Moore the Renishaw keeper. Four minutes later Town doubled their lead after a fine run by the impressive Pell found Kieran Job in the penalty area, His shot was initially saved by the keeper, but the young striker scored from the rebound.

The tally could well have been greater had it not been for some fine saves by the Renishaw keeper, but Town finally found a third following a corner on 82 minutes Sean McGuiness saw his powerful header saved by the keeper but the ball fell to Jimmy Rusby, who hit a well struck shot to record his first goal for Newark and make the final score 3-0..

When the teams met earlier in the season, Newark suffered a record 11-0 defeat which is an indication of how far they have progressed under Damo Parkinson, the season ending with renewed enthusiasm for season 2019/20.

Saturday’s match marked the end of a 15 year relationship with Collingham as the Blues head to their new ground in Newark next season, and continue their excellent relationship with the YMCA.

The match was followed by a presentation by Gary Johnson to Collingham on behalf of Newark Town and the end of season player presentations. Sam Wilford won the Harold Bradley Trophy for most man of match awards, The player’s award player was won by James Evans, and manager’s player was awarded to Lewis King.

While attention now turns to preparations for season 2019/20, the club would like to thank everyone involved in Newark Town this season, past and present, from Managers, players, volunteers, and Sponsors, who without their hard work and support, this great club could not continue to prosper..
