A second-half strike from Jordan Cummings spared New-ark’s blushes as they overcame strugglers Welbeck Lions.
Their opponents are bottom of the Central Midlands League North and went into the match without a point and a goal difference of minus 110 from 14 games.
However, a few recent acquisitions from Worksop Town’s youth set-up have bolstered their squad, and an under-strength Newark were made to work for their three points.
Newark took an early lead when George Pearce’s shot from long range deflected off a defender and wrong-footed the keeper.
A Welbeck shot went agonisingly wide, and they went close again as Joe Parker and Ricky Brewer were forced to clear off the line.
Their deserved equaliser came after some nice football down the left, which ended in a shot being buried into the corner past Nathan Burrows.
Newark tried to pull ahead before half-time, and Brewer hit a 30-yard strike that beat the goalkeeper but struck the crossbar before bouncing to safety.
Kieran Wall nearly gave Newark the perfect start to the second-half, but his acrobatic volley from a Tyler Martin cross hit the post and stayed out.
He went close moments late with a shot that flashed wide as Newark continued to press for a second goal.
Dom Swingler missed a gilt-edged chance as his initial shot struck the post before his rebound deflected off a defender on to the same post and also went close with a shot that hit the goalkeeper’s legs.
Cummings missed a chance moments later when he blasted the ball over from inside the box.
In the 65th minute, Newark eventually added to their tally when Joe Parker’s long ball upfield found the run of Cummings.
This time the midfielder kept his cool to round the goalkeeper before clinically finishing from a tight angle.
There was still time for Kieran Wall to hit the woodwork for the fifth time in the afternoon as Newark scrambled to victory.
