The Blues endured a frustrating afternoon at Askern, going down to a six goal defeat.

Askern 6 -0 Newark Town
It’s difficult to highlight too many positives from this one as Town were outplayed by a lively Askern side who soon identified their opponents’ shortcomings and took full advantage. With Liam Needham injured, Newark recalled Sam Russell in goal, but he could do little to stem the flow as he was afforded little protection. Matt Wagner and Guy Ellerton made their first full appearances for the Blues as manager Kevin O’Neill was yet again forced tpo ring the changes.
Askern attacked from the start, Collinson heading over from a Kearsley free kick in the first couple of minutes, Russell then doing well to beat away a shot from the lively Attard after he evaded two tackles before producing a good block from the unmarked Carver. Andrew Smith put a shot over the bar for Town before Russell was finally beaten on 15 minute, Knifton being allowed a free header from a right side corner. A succession of free kicks kept the pressure on the visitors’ rearguard and it was little surprise when the lead was increased on 23 minutes, Slew playing the ball through for Collinson to hammer into the roof of the net. Askern were using the full width of the pitch, Vlad Dadu and Ian Maplethorpe both enduring a torrid afternoon. In a brief counter attack, a good build up between Sam and Tom Wilford let in Wagner who shot a foot wide of the post. Askern scored a third on 27 minutes. Brumpton appeared to be sandwiched as he broke forward, the loose ball being played forward to Attard who shot across Russell and into the far corner. The Blues then enjoyed a spell of possession, Sam Wilford playing in a ball from the right which Brumpton couldn’t quite deflect enough to trouble the keeper. Ellerton then had a shot blocked following a corner. A fourth goal looked inevitable as three passes across the Newark penalty area finally found Kearsley who allowed the ball to run away from him when he really should have scored.
Askern virtually ensured the points in the first minute of the second half as Mundy crossed from the left for Attard to react quickest to claim his second of the afternoon. Tom Wilford battled through four challenges before being fouled, Jordan Cummings’ free kick being touched round the post by Jones. With 54 minutes gone Attard completed his hat trick with a knock-in from close range. Another Cummings free kick was smothered at the second attempt by the keeper. New signing Aurelien Ostermann replaced Wagner but was given little opportunity to make his mark as Newark were given little time on the ball to create anything in the way of pressure. The final goal came on 80 minutes, Slew’s incisive through ball allowing Attard to take his tally to four as he rolled the ball into the net to complete a miserable afternoon for Town.
