The Blues cantered to a comprehensive win over a plucky Welbeck outfit

Manager Kevin O’Neill refused to get carried away as Newark Town side which included three 16 year olds claimed their first victory of the season with a 9-1 success over perennial strugglers Welbeck.
Dom Swingler scored an impressive hat-trick as Town boosted their goal difference with a squad featuring four debutants, however O’Neill was quick to praise their opponents.
“I have a lot of respect for clubs like Welbeck. They keep getting beat but they still come back and keep trying,” he said.
“You can’t look at a result like this and say we’re going to do this every week, we have a lot tougher matches coming up.
“I was pleased with the way the younger lads played. As a team we got stronger after half-time and we looked to be playing some impressive stuff.”
Newark started the match brightly and thought they had taken an eighth minute lead, but FP McGregor’s header from a corner was chalked off as Adie Hillier was penalised for a foul.
The opening goal came in the 11th minute, as a flowing move saw Danny Purves pick up the ball on the left-hand side. He selflessly laid the ball off to Dom Swingler who tapped in his first.
However the lead only lasted for five minutes as Welbeck toiled away in attack. Michael Minty brought down a forward and debutant Liam Needham was beaten by Danny Ryan’s penalty.
Ian Hillier tried his luck straight from the kick off, forcing the goalkeeper to tip his attempt from the half way lineover the bar.
However the lead was restored minutes later, as Purves played a through ball to 16 year old Cody Donnelly, who kept his composure before firing low into the bottom corner.
Newark missed a couple of opportunities, but added a third goal five minutes before half-time.
FP McGregor saw his effort crash against the crossbar, but Ian Hillier was on hand to control the rebound before cleverly flicking it past the keeper.
Craig Roche struck the post three minutes into the second-half, but the Blues soon extended their advantage when substitute Joe Brumpton saw his smashed effort parried into the corner.
Three minutes later Swingler added his second with an easy tap-in after another mistake from the goalkeeper who misjudged a long punt up field.
Just an hour had been played when Newark added their sixth, as a trademark free-kick from Craig Roche nestled into the bottom right-hand corner.
Sub Joe Powell was the second player to score on his debut, as he prodded home a shot following good work on the left.
Swingler then completed his hat-trick with a beautiful goal in the 73rd minute, showing great composure before lifting his effort gently over the keeper.
The rout was completed with 11 minutes to play, Brumpton scoring from an acute angle following a determined run.
