The Blues added another notable scalp to their pre-season tally

Rainworth MW 1 – 4 Newark Town
The Blues added another notable scalp to their pre-season tally as they got the better of another Step 6 team on Tuesday night. For the second match running Town could only muster 13 players due to a variety of reasons, Luke Parsons and Marlon Grundy returning in place of Rhys Lewis and Lewis Chambers.
Town started well, Tom Moore seeing his shot blocked after Jonny Wiles had played the ball in from the right before Nathan Burrows pulled off a fingertip save from Adie Harris following a free kick, one of several conceded by the Blues in dangerous positions. Tyler Martin forced a sprawling save from home keeper Warren Squires before Newark took a 17th minute lead, Wiles finding the net following a corner from the left. Four minutes later the lead was doubled by Martin, who shone in the first half. Having won the ball in midfield, he found Zak Johnson on the right before hammering the return ball past Squires. Burrows was again in action, diving bravely at the feet of Henry Brooks to preserve Town’s lead. Martin was again involved as he again showed tenacity in midfield, this time Grundy crossing, but this time the header was narrowly wide. Town were using the whole width of the pitch with Johnson and Moore causing Rainworth all sorts of problems with their pace on the flanks. The lead was increased further on 41 minutes, this time Moore the architect as he played an inch-perfect ball to Craig Bridge and was there to fire the ball past Squires when it was crossed into the area. Rainworth had plenty of possession but found themselves up against a well-organised and highly efficient defence.
The home side pulled a goal back in the opening minutes, Joe Naylor reducing the arrears, but Newark threatened again, Wiles unleashing a shot from 35 yards which was just too high while Elliott Dye forced a corner after a loose clearance by the keeper. Ngoni Dongo, on as a second half substitute then played an excellent ball to Johnson, who saw his cross blocked as Grundy challenged. Kieron Job was unlucky when he latched on to a loose pass before advancing into the area, his shot coming back from the post. The Blues’ fourth goal on 73 minutes came from a long ball from Matthew Clarke, Job taking it on to send in a shot which rebounded from the keeper, Dye putting the loose ball into the empty net. Clarke almost got a fifth, in the closing stages, his lofted shot dropping inches over the bar.
