Town’s refusal to accept defeat

Newark Town 3 – 3 Sherwood Colliery
An incredible end to this match saw Town claw back a three goal deficit to force a draw against a full-strength Sherwood Colliery, one of the leading lights in the East Midlands Counties League.
Luke Parsons rang the changes once again, with Lewis Chambers and Rhys Lewis returning to the starting line-up while Sherwood fielded Kieran Wells who was at Flowserve last season.
The Blues had the first attack, as Chambers and Mark Faflik set up Tyler Martin, whose well-struck shot was just over the bar. The early stages were played at a high tempo, neither side given much time on the ball. Nathan Burrows was out well to clear a dangerous looking long ball out of defence before making a good block from the dangerous Wells. Sherwood took a 21st minute lead as a free kick out on the right was crossed for Charlie Taylor to hit a shot on the turn past Burrows. Tom Moore then made a timely interception to deflect a shot from Sherwood’s no 8 for a corner. At the other end Lewis made a strong run from midfield before slipping the ball to Chambers whose drive was inches wide of the upright. The pace of the game didn’t slacken and Burrows was again called into action to tip a shot from Sherwood’s no 10 over the bar. Town suffered a blow three minutes before the break as Parsons, who had been outstanding in the middle of the defence, was forced off the field following a nasty looking foul.
Sherwood doubled their lead a minute after the restart as Ryan Attwell missed a header, the ball reaching Liam West who slotted the ball past Burrows. Three minutes later Newark found themselves three down as Burrows could only get a hand to a ball in from the right, the ball falling to West who again took full advantage. Wells should have added a fourth but, when well placed, could only put his shot wide of the post. Midway through the half another cross from the right rebounded from Town’s bar. The Blues made numerous substitutions, one of which saw striker Martin operating at right back. With Town still three behind and the game entering the last five minutes, no-one could have foreseen what happened next. After Marlon Grundy had brought a sprawling save from the Sherwood keeper, he went one better on 86 minutes when he cut inside his marker to shoot into the far corner for what looked to be a consolation goal. A minute later Ngoni Dongo sent in a fierce drive which came back off the keeper, Grundy reacting quickly to score a quickfire second. Unbelievably, with a minute left on the clock, an error from the keeper saw the ball run loose and this time Craig Bridge was on hand to squeeze the ball home at the near post to finish a scarcely imaginable comeback which spoke volumes for Town’s refusal to accept defeat.
