Another good workout for the Blues

Newark Town 1 – 1 West Bridgford
Another good workout for the Blues in the second of their “behind closed doors” pre-season matches, this one against East Midlands Counties outfit West Bridgford. Town’s starting eleven contained ten players who appeared last season, the only exception being central defender Ryan Attwell, though several other new signings were introduced during the game.
Newark threatened first on 8 minutes, as a great solo run by Daryl Price saw him accelerate past three defenders, his shot beaten away by the visiting keeper. At the other end Nathan Burrows was called into action to field a couple of long range efforts, West Bridgford being guilty of being caught offside on several occasions. Dom Sibilski then set up another chance with a long ball into the area which was allowed to bounce but Tyler Martin’s shot was straight at the keeper. The Blues came within inches of taking the lead on the half hour as Tom Moore and Marlon Grundy combined well on the right, Grundy's low cross finding Martin who saw his goalbound shot hacked off the line. West Bridgford retaliated with their no.10 going close, his shot taking a deflection off a defender to pass inches past the woodwork. Town had another shot cleared off the line on the stroke of half time, this time Craig Bridge the unlucky player.
The Blues made several substitutions as the second half got underway, Town now having the benefit of a strong breeze at their backs. Zak Johnson and Grundy put together a promising move with some intricate interplay, Jammy Lloyd getting in a header which was cleared with difficulty. Newark fell behind in the 61st minute as former Town player Jawanza Grant went down in the area under a challenge from Johnson, Chris Neilson beating Burrows from the spot. The lead lasted for just eight minutes, the Blues drawing level on 69 minutes. A ball in from the right was met by Lewis Chambers, whose powerful shot came back off the bar, Tyler Martin reacting quickest to steer the ball home from ten yards. Newark finished strongly, Grundy bringing a brave dive from the Bridgford keeper then making a valiant effort to connect with a Matty Stevens cross in the final minute.
Manager Luke Parsons was pleased with the outcome. “The performance is far more important than the result” he said after the game. “there were lots of positives and also some things we need to work on. I felt our shape was better and we were more organised than we were at Brigg last Saturday, although we could have been better in the final third”
Newark’s Development team who will play in Division One North of the Central Midlands League in the coming season made an encouraging start, going down narrowly 3-2 to the more experienced Nunsthorpe Tavern from Grimsby of the Step 7 Lincolnshire League, the goals coming from Joe Bilton and Tim Perkins.
