Newark Town blasted their way into the next round of the Floodlit Cup with a six goal thrashing of Dinnington Town.

Newark Town blasted their way into the next round of the Floodlit Cup with a six goal thrashing of Dinnington Town, helping to erase the memory of the defeat to the South Yorkshire side a couple of months ago. Town were boosted by the return of George Pearce, and the appearance of Luke Parsons and Jordan Thomas on the subs bench after recent injuries.
Dinnington made slightly the better start, Craig Rhodes having to venture outside his area to make a timely tackle on Kirk in the opening minutes. Newark, however were soon into their stride and were in front on 8 minutes as Luke Hutchinson swung the ball into the area from the left, James Munson touching the ball back to allow Sam Wilford to beat Jackson from close range. Three minutes later the Blues were two up as Ricki O'Connell delivered the ball to the far post, and this time Dom Swingler was well placed to double the lead. As Dinnington retaliated, Joe Colman shot across the face of the Town goal, and Rhodes did well to hold on a blistering shot from Kirk. Reece Self almost made it three on 23 minutes after a deft flick from Swingler saw his shot blocked by Ben Colman, while at the other end, Sam Gregory got in an equally important challenge to deny Burton in the six yard box. While the home side showed plenty of energy, the quality of their distribution in the stiff breeze let them down, while Newark were quick to the ball and made much better use of their possession. On 37 minutes a free kick 25 yards out set the seal on an impressive first half for Town, Hillier directing his strike perfectly to send the ball past Jackson’s despairing dive.
In an attempt to improve their fortunes, the home side brought all three substitutes on within ten minutes of the restart, but it was Newark who created the better openings, Hillier’s snap shot narrowly clearing the bar before Town went fourth up on 59 minutes. Self was the provider, his well-judged ball across the penalty area being lashed home by the impressive Swingler. Unable to stem the flow, the home side began to show their frustration, picking up three bookings in quick succession, but were unable to prevent the Blues going five up in the 64th minute with the goal of the night. Following another Hillier free kick, Jackson got in a firm clearing punch, but Wilford pulled off a superb volley from 25 yards out which flew into the top corner. Parsons and Thomas replaced Pearce and Munson for the last 20 minutes, Thomas’s first involvement seeing him create good space in the area, but lobbing his shot way over the bar. He then put Wilford clear, a good low save from Jackson denying the midfielder his hat trick. With four minutes remaining, Thomas was brought down in the area by the keeper, who received what looked to be an excessively harsh red card. Swingler stepped up to complete his first hat-trick for the club and set the seal on a convincing victory which ensures continuing cup interest for the Blues.
