Blues put on a sparkling performance of attacking football

Newark Town 6 – 1 Sutton Rovers
The Blues put on a sparkling performance of attacking football to Comprehensively beat their South Yorkshire opponents. Matty Clarke made his first appearance of the season to partner Rhys Lewis at the heart of Town’s defence with young Zak Kersey starting on the left.
Town began positively, Clarke heading wide from a Nathan Arnold free kick hoofed behind by Mitch Wain. Another Arnold free kick was met by James Gardner whose header was again too high before Newark struck twice in as many minutes to rock their opponents. With 16 minutes on the clock Sid Costa sent in the perfect ball from the right which Arnold expertly brought down before stroking the ball past keeper Lee Mayberry. Two minutes later Arnold turned supplier playing in Lewis Chambers who provided a clinical finish. Blues keeper Harry Haywood was brought into action, timing his tackle well to deny the onrushing Adi Parker. Lewis had the ball in the Sutton net again on 27 minutes but was ruled offside. Newark’s third goal on 33 minutes had an element of farce about it, Mayberry, under pressure from Arnold, allowing the ball to go between his legs for the Town boss to walk the ball into the empty net. It wasn’t long before the home side put the result beyond doubt, Arnold whipping the ball across to leave Chambers with a tap-in on 41 minutes.
Newark picked up where they left off in the early stages of the second half with Kersey’s shot hitting Jackson Buckthorpe and rebounding to Wiles, whose drive was inches over the bar. After Cain Wellings had gone equally close at me the other end, Chambers sent a flicked shot just too high, the striker completed his hat trick in the 61st minute. Ben Wallace floated a free kick into the penalty area, James Gardner rising highest to head the ball goalwards for Chambers to finish the job, taking his goal tally to six in three starts. The blues brought up the half dozen two minutes later, Chambers playing the ball in from wide on the left for Buckthorpe to score his first goal for the club. Sutton had a bit more of the game in the last twenty minutes and were rewarded ten minutes from time Parker, the pick of the visiting team, heading firmly past Haywood from Wain’s corner. Town could have made it seven as Kersey’s beautifully judged through ball found Arnold, who was thwarted by a well timed block from Mayberry.
Newark are at home for the third Saturday running when the face Staveley Reserves.
