The value of playing till the final whistle was never better illustrated, as the Blues scored twice in added time to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, moving them up to fourth place in the table. Town were forced into a late change as George Pearce aggravated a groin strain in the pre-match warm up, Sean Fulcher stepping up from the subs bench to partner Arron Martin in the centre of the defence.
Newark could hardly have got off to a worse start, finding themselves two goals down as early as the 14th minute. Just 8 minutes had gone when Craig Rhodes failed to hold a free kick from Jason Foster, and six minutes later James Whitfield got the better of Darren Townsley adding a second from an acute angle. Town were up against it for most of the opening stages, as the home side allowed them no time on the ball, though many of Glapwell’s attacks were halted due to Parfitt being repeatedly caught offside. A fluent move involving Jordan Thomas and Dom Swingler ended with Sam Wilford’s final shot going over the bar, while Ngoni Dongo also threatened, but again couldn’t keep the ball down. A quick free kick from Luke Hutchinson passed inches over Swingler’s head, before the Blues pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on 41 minutes, Jake Wharton bringing Hutchinson down and Thomas easily beating John Styring in the home goal.
In a lightning start to the second half, Thomas got his second after just 17 seconds as he blasted the ball home from 20 yards after being set up by Wilford. The balance of the game was now with the Blues, Thomas going close to claiming a hat trick after Reece Self swept the ball out to Chris Dobbie. Glapwell’s frustrations were beginning to show, resulting in two cautions, as Newark increased the pressure, and it was against the run of play when leading scorer Nathan Whitehead launched a 25 yard effort into the far corner to hand the advantage back to the home side on the hour. The influential Thomas limped off with a hamstring pull to be replaced by James Munson, and he almost made an immediate impact, whipping in a shot which brought a timely clearing header from Naughton. As Newark pressed for an equaliser, a free kick from Self saw Munson’s firm down ward header clawed round the post by Styring before an intricate passing movement saw Munson’s final shot heading for the top corner only to be fingertipped over the top. As the game reached 90 minutes, Glapwell sub Murcott was sent off for a two footed lunge on Self. It looked like all of Newark’s second half dominance was to be in vain, but a minute into added time, Martin jinked his way into the area, finding Wilford, whose shot took a deflection off a defender’s outstretched leg and looped over the keeper. With 95 minutes on the clock, the Blues’ comeback was complete, as Naughton conceded his second penalty, bringing down Martin, Self showing a cool head to stroke the ball home from the spot to the delight of the travelling support.
