Newark Town’s involvement in the Notts Senior Cup was abruptly halted in the second round following a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of local rivals Ollerton Town.
They were unable to deal with their opponents’ pace and quality, and could have lost by a wider margin..
The opening exchanges were fairly even, both teams taking time to adjust to the windy conditions, which made a longer passing game particularly tricky.
Kyle Clarkson missed the game’s first chance, shooting across the face of goal after collecting a mishit goal kick from Newark keeper Liam Needham.
Danny Purves went closest for Newark early on, volleying wide of the post after a deft flick on from Will Fry.
Ollerton broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, when Chris Hewitt produced a quality turn to give himself space just outside the area. His effort flew into the top corner from 25 yards, giving Needham no chance.
Craig Roche went close with a low drive from a Joe Brumpton pull back that drifted wide of the target, but otherwise chances were few and far between for the Blues against a strong wind.
Hewitt nearly doubled Ollerton’s lead with a deft header from a well worked corner, but the impressive Ricky North managed to head clear off the line.
A deserved second goal came in the 39th minute, as Clarkson was given ample time on the edge of the area before unleashing a beautifully weighted strike that found the corner.
FP MacGregor was extremely fortunate not to be sent off just before the break after denying Ollerton the chance to extend the lead with a blatantly deliberate handball on the edge of the area. He received a yellow card.
Kicking with the wind in the second-half only seemed to make the task more difficult for Newark, and three minutes after the break they went further behind,
Craig Stanton was given plenty of room in the area, and he volleyed into the bottom corner under the body of Needham to extend their advantage.
Newark’s afternoon went from bad to worse, when Purves was sent off for two needless bookings in the space of a minute.
The first came following an altercation with Jamie Charlton, which saw both players cautioned.
A minute later, he pushed another player in front of the referee, giving him no option but to show a second yellow, making a difficult task virtually impossible.
Ollerton extended their lead in the 62nd minute, when Paul Burgess headed home a corner after being left completely unmarked.
The rout was complete ten minutes later, when a sumptuous ball over the top found Callum Atkinson. With the defence completely out of position, he ran through and found thenet with ease..
Substitute Michael Minty had Newark’s best chance of the second-half, his shot from 25 yards clipping the top of the crossbar.
A poor afternoon was capped in the final few moments, when sub Richard Dadu suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury towards the end, leaving Newark to see out the final few moments with nine men.
