Newark Town Football Club together with FC Emmendingen of Germany are to recreate one of the most famous games of football ever played near Messines in Belgium close to where that original game was played. On Christmas Eve 1914 German Soldiers placed small Christmas trees on the parapet above their trenches, they lit candles and sang Christmas carols, then both sets of soldiers met and exchanged gifts. They then played on Christmas Day that remarkable game of football amongst the twisted barbed wire and shell holes in what was once a farmers field in no-man’s land.
We are inviting Advertiser readers 14 and over to create a poster to depict the famous game which was played in 1914. Your poster must have ‘Newark Town V FC Emmendingen’ on it. The winner will receive two Newark Town FC 14/15 season tickets and two sets of merchandise and a £50 gift voucher to spend in a Newark store of the winners choice.
